Process mapping

Charting how the work really flows, step by step.

Process mapping means charting how the work really flows, step by step. You draw who does what, in what order and where the work passes from one person to the next. That way you make visible what otherwise only exists in people's heads.

What matters is that you map how the work actually runs, not how it should run. It is precisely in the gap between the two that you find the detours, the duplicate checks and the steps nobody can explain any more. Seeing that gap is the first gain.

A good map is worth discussing with the people who do the work. They know where things get stuck and which exceptions really exist. With their input, the map becomes an honest picture rather than wishful thinking.
