Workflow automation lets recurring steps run by themselves. An approval that automatically goes to the right person, an invoice that books itself, a notification that goes out as soon as an order comes in: each time, the system takes over work that someone would otherwise do by hand.
The gain lies not only in time, but also in reliability. An automated step is never forgotten and always performs the same check. That keeps people free for the work where judgement and personal contact are truly needed.
Automate what is stable and predictable. A process that is still changing constantly or is full of exceptions will benefit from simplification first. Automate too early and you set a shaky process in concrete.
